The Grotesque Factor
Fecha_22/10/2012
What do we mean when we use the word “grotesque” in the art world?
Malaga’s Museo Picasso offers us a tour through the diverse areas of complexity that – in artistic terms as well as those of aesthetic taste – are recognised as falling under the rubric of the grotesque. This exhibition takes on the semantic and cultural ambiguity of the object analysed therein, assuming its heterogeneous condition, in which contempt and mercy are suddenly cited, along with laughter and crying, empathy and derision, horror and tenderness…in short, the simultaneous rejection and embracing of what we are.
The Grotesque Factor brings together over 270 paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, books, film fragments and documents, including works by 74 famous artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Otto Dix, James Ensor, Max Ernst, José Gutiérrez Solana, Victor Hugo, etc. The works are complied in a catalogue printed by Artes Gráficas Palermo.
Exhibition period : From 22-10-2012 until 10-02-2013.
