The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum has decided to celebrate its twenty-first birthday by paying a well-deserved homage to the French post-impressionist painter Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin. Over one hundred of the artist’s paintings, lent by art museums from all over the world, invite us to explore -from 9 October al 13 January- Tahiti on the painter’s final journey, where he died penniless and infirm.

Taking Gauguin’s time in Polynesia as the narrative thread, visitors will enjoy seeing paintings that are attractive, stunning, exotic which in some way ended up influencing subsequent generations in the first decades of the twentieth century.

The most significant paintings, and possibly the most iconic ones, are Mata Mua (Carmen Thyssen’s private collection), Two Tahitian women (Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York) and Matamoe (Pushkin Museum in Moscow).

The exhibition, which was inaugurated by the King and Queen of Spain, has a book-catalogue printed by Artes Gráficas Palermo.
